Fleming College is proud to announce that its Centre for Advancement of Water and Wastewater Technologies (CAWT) has been renewed as a Technology Access Centre (TAC) by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) for an additional five years.
This renewal was part of an announcement made June 14 by Yasir Naqvi, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Health and Ryan Turnbull, Parliamentary Secretary to the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry on behalf of the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science, and Industry.
The TAC designation comes with $1.75M in continued funding, further supporting CAWT's mission to advance research and innovation in water and wastewater technologies.
"We are incredibly proud of the work being done at the CAWT," remarked Maureen Adamson, President of Fleming College. "The renewal of its status as an NSERC Technology Access Centre is a testament to the CAWT's excellence and its vital role in fostering innovation. This sustained support from NSERC will enable us to continue our collaborative research projects, support innovation, and provide invaluable training experiences for our students."
Located in Lindsay, Ontario, the CAWT is Fleming College's longest-running applied research centre and the only Canadian college water research facility with ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accreditation. With an impressive suite of analytical instruments, customized facilities, and talented experts in water and wastewater, the CAWT is sought after by industry, government, academia, and non-profit organizations.
"Being proactive in adapting to meet the changing needs of the water and wastewater industries has been a consistent mandate at the CAWT and remains one of the reasons why it has successfully operated for twenty years," continued President Adamson. "Over the next five years, through new strategic collaborations, the CAWT will have a significant effect on many of Canada's other innovative sectors."
While primarily focused on supporting the water and wastewater industries with valuable research and development services, the CAWT has expanded its work to include wastewater research relevant to other industries, including mining, breweries, aquaculture, and advanced manufacturing. The CAWT has also created a unique full-scale wastewater treatment testing and research site, directly filling a need in the provincial marketplace.
NSERC TACs are recognized as specialized centres of expertise, equipment, and technology. They play a crucial role in fostering innovation, leading to beneficial business, social and/or health outcomes for Canada. With this renewal, the CAWT will continue to address critical water and wastewater challenges, providing sustainable solutions that benefit communities, industries, and ecosystems.
