MOHAWK COLLEGE
Mohawk College staff and faculty team take on challenges of AI

September 23, 2024

A team of five Mohawk College faculty and staff members have been selected to participate in the American Association of Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) inaugural Institute on AI, Pedagogy, and the Curriculum.

This new, fully online institute is designed to help departments, programs, colleges, and universities respond effectively to the challenges and opportunities artificial intelligence (AI) presents for courses and curricula. The initiative will take place between September 2024 and April 2025, during which time the institute will engage participating teams via virtual events, mentorship, and interactions as they develop and implement AI action plans for their classrooms, curricula and campuses.

The Mohawk College team of five consists of:

  • Brian Gould, Director, Academic Technology and Artificial Intelligence Innovation
  • Andrew Reszitnyk, Professor - Teaching and Learning Consultant for Artificial Intelligence
  • Alison Dunn, Professor - Curriculum and Program Quality Consultant
  • Hayley Hudson, Professor - Academic Integrity Facilitation
  • Vishal Pathareddy Appanah - Instructional Designer

This first-of-its-kind program brings together the world's foremost experts in AI and teams from higher education institutions to create action plans to address modern challenges of how AI is reshaping the landscape of higher education.

In recent years, the Centre for Teaching and Learning Innovation has received numerous faculty requests for resources to help address challenges due to student use of AI tools like ChatGPT for their assignments, note taking and more.

Furthermore, as AI tools are increasingly being used in a variety of industries, faculty need to prepare students for AI use in their future workplaces.

The Mohawk College team is one of only two Canadian institutions accepted to the program, putting the college at the forefront of addressing AI challenges in education in Canada.

The team's goal is to create a comprehensive information hub for faculty and staff with information on: academic integrity and AI; redesigning courses and assessments to account for AI use; using AI tools to improve faculty and staff workflow at the college; and to redesign course curricula to teach students how to leverage AI tools and ensure future-ready graduates in the workplace.

The team aims to have the first iteration of this information hub ready by April 2025. It will be showcased at the Institute's capstone event on April 10 and 11, 2025.
