NIPISSING UNIVERSITY
Preparing students for the real world – Nipissing's Experiential Learning initiative aims to transform education

September 10, 2025

Nipissing University is advancing its commitment to innovative learning through a bold new initiative focused on experiential and work-integrated learning (EL/WIL). Sparked by the institution's 2023-28 Strategic Plan and outlined in Action Item 10 of the Academic and Operational Plan (APOP), an ad hoc EL/WIL committee has been hard at work exploring how best to expand meaningful opportunities that connect students with real-world experiences, and the momentum is building.

Led by Associate Professor Dr. Denyse Lafrance-Horning, of the School of Business, the committee was formed last fall and quickly gained traction with support from 24 enthusiastic faculty and staff across campus.

"I think this speaks to the great resources that we currently have at NU and the passionate group of faculty and staff who have long advocated and implemented EL/WIL initiatives," said Lafrance-Horning.

The committee has taken a multi-layered approach to its work, drawing on global best practices, academic research, and local data. A curated list of resources includes international findings, typologies, and frameworks. At the same time, an internal audit across programs and departments has helped build a comprehensive picture of current practices and perceptions. External perspectives from students, alumni, and community partners have also been essential to informing a well-rounded vision.

Now, the team is moving toward the development of preliminary recommendations that will guide the integration of EL/WIL more broadly across the university.

For students, the outcomes are significant:

  • Real-world skill development
  • Improved academic performance
  • Strengthened professional identity and networks
  • Increased confidence and career clarity
  • A greater sense of belonging and well-being

Experiential learning doesn't just benefit students; it creates ripple effects that enhance faculty engagement, community relationships, and even regional development. Educational institutions gain enhanced reputations and strengthened partnerships with industry and community organizations. Meanwhile, host organizations tap into fresh perspectives, expanded work capacity, and recruitment opportunities, all while giving back and contributing to students' personal and professional growth.

"EL/WIL needs and circumstances are always evolving," said Lafrance-Horning. "Ongoing consultation ensures we can adapt to changing needs and continue building programs that are relevant and impactful."

The coming months will mark a key milestone as the committee prepares to release a report outlining its findings and preliminary recommendations. This document will offer a vision for how experiential and work-integrated learning can be embedded into the Nipissing experience across disciplines, supporting student success while fostering stronger ties between the university and the communities it serves.

Fresh off her attendance at the CEWIL Canada Conference, Lafrance-Horning is eager about what's ahead.

"It was both energizing and informative to learn from other institutions and explore emerging trends and practices in the EL/WIL space," she said. "We're excited to bring that learning back to Nipissing and build something truly meaningful together."

Nipissing continues to shape a future where education meets experience and where students graduate not just work-ready, but world-ready.
