RYERSON UNIVERSITY
New Business of Cannabis Course Responds to Market Need

June 28, 2018

Ryerson University's G. Raymond Chang School of Continuing Education, in collaboration with the Ted Rogers School of Management (TRSM), is pleased to announce the launch of a new introductory course, The Business of Cannabis.

The Chang School is the first university continuing education provider in Ontario to offer a course on the business of cannabis. Building on Ryerson's expertise in entrepreneurship education, the course will explore a range of topics including financing for cannabis businesses and the complex regulations pertaining to the cultivation, processing, distribution, marketing and selling of cannabis.

The objective of the course is to give Canadian entrepreneurs a competitive edge in seizing this billion dollar business opportunity. Moreover, the course will increase employability for those seeking entry or intermediate level functional positions in the cannabis industry.

"We are pleased to collaborate with TRSM to help our students develop their capacity to succeed in the cannabis industry. At The Chang School, we take great strides to ensure that our programming aligns with the needs of the Canadian labour market. An estimated $23 billion-dollar industry, there will be a multitude of unique business and employment opportunities that will present themselves with the legalization of recreational cannabis use," said Dr. Marie Bountrogianni, Dean of The Chang School.

Offered in the fall, students will learn how to apply entrepreneurship principles such as opportunity identification and evaluation, lean methods and bootstrapping. They will also create a business plan and participate in a site tour.

"Those seeking opportunities to capitalize on the fast-emerging Canadian cannabis market require educational opportunities that provide up-to-the-minute insights. That's what the Ted Rogers School of Management and our partners at The Chang School do best: quickly and expertly respond to where the market is going. TRSM's expertise in developing courses focusing on entrepreneurship will help students better understand this dynamic sector," said Dr. Avner Levin, Interim Dean, TRSM.
