DELTA SCHOOL DISTRICT
Delta Student Police Academy: Building Leaders One Drill at a Time

July 18, 2025

The annual Delta Student Police Academy launched last week with more than 20 enthusiastic high school students from across Delta stepping into the boots of future law enforcement officers.

Over the eight days, these students won't just be learning about policing they'll be living it. From mastering drill formations and understanding the law to testing their limits at the shooting range and in physical training, the academy offers a hands-on, behind-the-scenes look at what it truly means to wear the law enforcement badge. This gives students a valuable opportunity to see if a career in the police service is a good fit.

Day one included drill practice an intense but rewarding introduction to discipline and coordination. Within just 30 minutes, the group gradually improved their synchronicity as they learned how drill tactics help police show presence and de-escalate situations without the use of force.

For many students, this academy is more than just a summer program it's a step toward a lifelong dream.

"This is an opportunity to better understand what it takes to become a police officer. I would love to work for Delta Police Department one day. It's been great so far. I've met so many people." Manraj, North Delta Secondary

"I've wanted to be in law enforcement since kindergarten. I'm really enjoying what we've been learning so far. I've even enjoyed the push-ups!" Cade, South Delta Secondary

"I wanted to gain new experiences and insight into the law. I've learned a lot and it's only the first day!" Seamus, Delta Secondary

"I've wanted to be a police officer since Grade 6. I've been in air cadets before, so I enjoyed the drill. Everyone is so friendly. I'm looking forward to getting better at push-ups and going to the shooting range." Amitoj, Burnsview Secondary

Constable Nathan Porter, Community Liaison Officer and one of the Student Police Academy's organizers, sees the program as a highlight of the year: "It's great seeing students who are usually shy on day one grow in confidence and find their voice. The camp challenges them to be self-aware, disciplined, and work as a team. By the end, they leave with more confidence, new friendships, and unforgettable memories. From a personal perspective, I think it's the best two weeks of policing all year!"

As the academy continues this week, these young recruits will face new challenges, build lasting bonds, and gain a deeper appreciation for the dedication and responsibility that comes with serving their community.

Thank you, Delta Police Foundation, for sponsoring such a rewarding program for students in Delta!
