Samuel Robertson Technical (SRT) culinary students had the recipe for success at the Skills BC regional competition on March 3. With the clock ticking, the young chefs showcased their culinary skills and delivered restaurant-quality dishes that earned them the top three podium spots.

"To succeed in your career you require dedication, practice and perseverance. These attributes are also necessary in competition," said chef Mike Steele, culinary instructor at SRT.
"The right approach will provide you opportunity and will set a path for career, personal and professional success."
As part of the competition, which was hosted at SRT, the student chefs prepared minestrone soup and an entrée meal based on provided ingredients.
Along with the culinary competition, SRT also hosted carpentry and welding events on March 3.
SRT welding students Devin Macintosh (gold) and Jeremy Clarke (bronze) earned podium spots in the competition that featured nine competitors from four different schools.
"It was a very positive event," said SRT welding instructor Thomas Hoyme. "Grade 12 students helped Grade 10 students feel welcomed. Each student had success in at least one of the eight different welds they had to perform. I feel that every student left the school with their heads held high and said it motivated them to continue welding for the future."
In the carpentry competition, Terry Fox Secondary students took home all three medals.
Winners of regional competitions advance to the provincials and have the opportunity to advance to the national and/or World Skills competitions.
Earlier this month, Maple Ridge - Pitt Meadows School District students swept the podium at a regional event hosted at Westview Secondary, taking gold, silver and bronze in the automotive service (secondary) and cabinetmaking (secondary) categories.
