Students win medals at Skills BC provincials

Six Maple Ridge - Pitt Meadows School District students earned podium spots at the Skills BC provincial competition in Abbotsford on April 18.


Culinary student Carmen Rosa Bilodeau. "Carmen made us very proud and represented our school with the highest level of professionalism and poise," said chef Mike Steele, culinary instructor at SRT.
 

The event featured more than 600 competitors participating in 58 different categories.

"The Maple Ridge - Pitt Meadows School District values trades training as an essential component in secondary school education. Skills learned in the trades are lifelong and often provide a foundation for a successful career," said Brad Dingler, Secondary School Apprenticeship and Trades Co-ordinator.

"Once again, our students earned the opportunity to compete at the provincial level by winning their regional qualifying events and many returned home with medals. I'm incredibly proud of every single student who represented our school district at the provincials."   

SD42 provincial medal winners:

  • Nicholas Simms, Arthur Peak Centre, gold (masonry)
  • Taylor Chenier, Arthur Peak Centre, bronze (masonry)
  • Carmen Rosa Bilodeau, SRT, gold (culinary arts)
  • Hannah Croswell , SRT, silver (hairdressing)
  • Kayla Raymond, SRT, bronze (hairdressing)
  • Zach Gallahar, Westview, gold (automotive service)

Gold medal winners earn a place on Team BC and will compete at the national competition in Edmonton from June 4-5. National winners have a chance to join Team Canada for the 2019 WorldSkills in Kazan, Russia.
