CALGARY BOARD OF EDUCATION
Two New Schools Provide Amazing Learning Spaces for Students

October 4, 2023

In early April, the CBE opened Prairie Sky School, a long-awaited kindergarten to Grade 9 school in the city's northeast, followed by North Trail High School on Aug. 31. These two schools have the capacity to serve around 2,500 students in the city's north.

North Trail High School serves students from Country Hills, Country Hills Village, Coventry Hills, Harvest Hills, Hidden Valley, and Panorama Hills, while Prairie Sky School serves students from the community of Skyview Ranch

North Trail High School was built by Alberta Infrastructure and Bird Construction. It boasts state-of-the-art facilities, including bright classrooms, a large gathering space, a theatre, career and technology classrooms, an automotive shop, culinary arts classrooms, science labs, gymnasiums, and more.

"It is an amazing, beautiful building. However, it only truly came to life when the students arrived," said Mike Bester, Principal of North Trail High School. The North Trail High School team, CBE Facility Operations, Bird Construction, and many others have been working for months in the school, anticipating welcoming students this year. "We are so happy students can enjoy this building as much as we have enjoyed working towards opening it. It is going to be a great school year," says  Principal Bester.

This year marks Prairie Sky School's first full year in its new building. "Staff and students were able to experience the new school last spring, so there is a lot of excitement in these first few days of school as students return to their new school," says Mona Harswinder Bains, Principal of Prairie Sky School.

Prairie Sky School was built by Alberta Infrastructure and Jen-Col Construction. The school building provides a large and diverse range of classrooms that cater to students from kindergarten to Grade 9. With bright classrooms, a large learning commons space, culinary arts classrooms, a wood shop, a large gymnasium and more, the school provides great spaces for all students to learn in and enjoy.

Both schools were intentionally designed with modern technology to provide environments where students can flourish academically and creatively.

The opening of new schools is a testament to the hard work and collaboration of many people in the CBE; various departments such as facility projects, IT, Human Resources, Finance, Communications, Transportation, Planning, and educational staff organized and prepared everything for the arrival of the students.

The CBE extends its sincere appreciation to all whose collective commitment has made these milestones possible.
