CAMPBELL RIVER SCHOOL DISTRICT
Sayward Elementary Embarks on a Salmon Life Cycle Study

December 6, 2023

Sayward Elementary School is abuzz with excitement following the arrival of 100 Chinook salmon eggs last week. This is the start of an enriching educational experience for students from kindergarten through grade 6, as they delve into hands-on science and math lessons about the life cycle of salmon.

In a display of leadership and collaboration, senior students are playing a pivotal role, acting as mentors for the younger students and guiding them through the process of monitoring Accumulated Thermal Units (ATUs). This crucial task involves calculating the overall temperature of the salmon's habitat to accurately predict the hatching of these eggs. This interactive approach not only enhances their understanding of biology but also offers practical math lessons. The ultimate goal of this project is to nurture and release the salmon into the local Salmon River, providing a direct connection with the natural environment in Sayward.

This project has been made possible thanks to the generous support of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) through their Salmonids in the Classroom Program, an integral part of the Stream to Sea initiative. We extend our gratitude to the DFO for their pivotal role in this initiative.

We are incredibly proud to witness our Sayward Elementary students engaging in this meaningful project. It seamlessly integrates science, math, and environmental stewardship, fostering a hands-on learning environment. This initiative is a testament to our commitment to providing our students with experiences that enhance their understanding of the world around them, nurturing their sense of responsibility towards our environment.
