The Twin Rivers Education Program has made its move into the Happyvale building. Renovations have been completed including the refurbishing of the gymnasium, and four portables installed at the site.
TREC principal Cory Carmichael said the best part of the move is that it brings TREC students back under the same roof with Four Directions and Bridges program students.
"It will be phenomenal, we will have consistency and a little more permanence. We can make this our home for now, and build our community back together," he said.
There are currently 237 students registered in the three programs. Carmichael said it will also be nice to have more space to run the school's breakfast and lunch program.
It is the second move in three months for the students and staff, since the Parkcrest Elementary fire on Sept. 5. TREC students had been housed in a section of NorKam Secondary, as a school within a school.' Bridges students were accommodated at the John Tod Centre Y, courtesy of the Boys & Girls Club of Kamloops. The United Way provided space for Four Directions at their new Xchange building.
This move means all students displaced by the fire are now in the classrooms they will remain in until the Parkcrest Elementary School can be replaced.
"Once again, we cannot thank our community partners enough for their generous support for our students and staff throughout this entire process," said Alison Sidow, School Superintendent. "We are witnessing the determination and focus of our SD73 maintenance, IT and staff. Together we have all proven how Kamloops can rise to meet a difficult situation, work together, and move forward."
