Two SD83 students took high honours at the DHHproud-Showcase held April 21-22, 2024, in Burnaby. This event, sponsored by the Provincial Outreach Program, features art, American Sign Language Poetry, and a Spotlight communication competition for students across B.C. who are deaf or hard of hearing.
"The speeches were all so great! All of our students did an amazing job, and Joelle Harris, a grade 12 student at A.L. Fortune placed second In the Spotlight Communication competition and Bella Karbowski of Highland Park Elementary won the ASL Poetry competition in her age group," shared Kristina Baker, SD83's teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.
The Speech Competition could be completed orally or using ASL. Students from all over BC went to Burnaby to share their speeches on the topic "My Deaf/Hard of Hearing Super Power". SD83 had four students, Emily Shaw, Lana Lynd, Julia Couch, and Joelle Harris, participate in the speech competition. Bella was the only SD83 student to compete in the ASL Poetry Competition. "We are proud of all of the students who participated. They did an amazing job," added Kristina.
"This event, organized annually by the Provincial Outreach Program, encourages and reminds Deaf and Hard of Hearing students to be proud of who they are," said Baker. "It is also a great opportunity for students to meet and network with others from across B.C."
