PARKLAND SCHOOL DIVISION NO. 70
Youth Internship Incentive Program Launches at PSD

April 20, 2021

Parkland School Division has partnered with CAREERS: The Next Generation to bring their Youth Internship Incentive Program (YiiP) to the Spruce Grove, Stony Plain and Parkland County area.

The Youth Internship Incentive Program is designed to increase the number of employers supporting work integrated learning internships in trades and technologies. By providing a financial incentive for employers, this program will expand an employer's ability to achieve their goals as well as to enhance opportunities for youth that align with Alberta's skilled worker needs.

How It Works

Area employers can apply with CAREERS to participate in the Youth Internship Incentive Program. In exchange for providing a set number of hours of on-the-job training, mentorship and experience, approved employers will be able to recruit up to three high school interns for up to 16 weeks, and receive funding that can be used to offset the expenses incurred in providing a work-integrated learning experience, including student wages, safety training requirements, mentorship support, and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) directly related to the student(s)' position(s).

Meanwhile, PSD high school students who have earned credit in trades programs and/or information & communications technology programs, took part in the Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP), or otherwise fit the qualifications for CAREERS' off-campus programs can connect with Parkland School Division's Vocational Education Coordinator to see what internships they may qualify to apply for under YiiP.

In this manner, area employers are able to hire motivated students and mentor them in their crafts, while receiving funding to offset costs, and the opportunity to employ these students well beyond their high school years. Participating students can receive on-the-job training in a real-world, paid position that accrues hours towards their eventual apprenticeship or career path, as well as potential future employment opportunities with their mentoring employer.

More Information

Employers or students interested in YiiP are subject to certain eligibility requirements, and are advised to visit the CAREERS website for full details about the program, including the various funding options and current internship opportunities available. They are also encouraged to connect with Parkland School Division's Vocational Education Coordinator and make an appointment to discuss their options.

Parkland School Division is excited to offer its students the chance to connect to real-world employment opportunities in the community and help them gain the confidence, resilience, insight and skills required to thrive in, and positively impact, the world.
