A teacher at Glendale Sciences and Technology School has been awarded a Prime Minister's Award for Teaching Excellence in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math).

Lindsay Unland, the Science and Technology Lead Teacher at Glendale Science and Technology School, was recently awarded a Certificate of Achievement for the work she does to make science and technology engaging and fun for all students.

"When Sandre (Principal at Glendale) first brought me the nomination package and shared the letters, I was deeply honoured just to be nominated," she said. "Reading what my colleagues said and wrote about me was incredibly touching and filled me with so much gratitude and appreciation. When I found out I was receiving the award, I was blown away."

As part of her role, Lindsay coordinates all of the science and technology activities in the school for students in Kindergarten to Grade 8, which provides for some great teaching opportunities.

"At Glendale, we have scheduled collaborative time with our Grade 1-5 teachers to discuss and explore the curriculum and brainstorm activities and lessons," she said. "The implementation of the new science curriculum has given us a fresh slate to explore creative ways to teach the content. I take those brainstormed ideas and help develop hands-on, engaging activities for students. I enjoy working with our Grades 6, 7 and 8 students through teaching our STEM related option courses to highlight STEM content and build capacity in students."

Lindsay began her teaching career in 2007, with this being her second year at Glendale Sciences and Technology School.

"I have always loved science and knew I wanted to pursue something related to it. When I was deciding on my university path I chose a combined science and education degree program," she said. "I enjoyed working with youth, and through that program and my practicum, I discovered my love of teaching a subject I am passionate about."

She added her role at Glendale has been a dream.

"I love teaching and I love science. Being able to share my passion in those areas with so many students in our building is wonderful," she said. "I believe that learning science should be experienced, hands-on and interactive. Having the opportunity to play a role in bringing that vision to life in our school has been incredibly fulfilling and rewarding."

Sandre Bevan, Principal at Glendale Sciences and Technology School, said Lindsay has completely transformed how the school teaches STEM.

"Thanks to her leadership, STEM is now a vital part of our educational approach, not just a label," she said. "Students have developed a newfound passion for science under her guidance. Lindsay's remarkable impact on STEM education at Glendale truly makes her deserving of the Prime Minister's Award for Teaching Excellence."
