WESTWIND SCHOOL DIVISION
Cardston Elementary Student Honoured with Prestigious Provincial Award

April 23, 2025

Shia Firstrider, a Grade 2 student at Cardston Elementary School, has been selected as one of only 12 students across Alberta to receive the 2025 Honouring Spirit: Indigenous Student Award, presented by the Alberta School Boards Association (ASBA).

Open to students from Kindergarten to Grade 12, this provincial award recognizes Indigenous students who demonstrate outstanding leadership, courage, cultural pride, and dedication to their educational journeys. The selection committee chose Shia from over 300 nominees for this prestigious honour.

Principal Stacy Jacobs of Cardston Elementary School nominated Shia, praising her for her leadership, empathy, and cultural contributions to the school community. Shia speaks and understands Blackfoot and often shares her language with others through recitations of the Blackfoot Prayer and by introducing new words to classmates and staff. Her positive attitude and willingness to assist others make her a beloved role model in the school.

"At Cardston Elementary School, Shia models the Blackfoot value Kimmapiiypitsinni kindness to others in all her interactions with friends and teachers," says Jacobs. "She excels in her learning and works hard to always do her best.  When faced with a challenge, Shia is resilient.  Most of all, Shia is rooted in her Blackfoot culture and is always willing to share her culture in the community and school.  She is learning to speak her Blackfoot language and shares her beliefs through simple acts such as offering the Blackfoot prayer at school assemblies and rodeo events."

Outside of school, Shia enjoys spending time with her grandmother and learning about horses, as well as barrel racing. She has graduated from riding a small horse to a larger one an accomplishment that reflects her courage and growth.

The Honouring Spirit: Indigenous Student Award ceremony occurred on April 14, 2025, at the Queen Elizabeth II Building in Edmonton. Alberta dignitaries and ASBA Indigenous Advisory Council members delivered remarks at the event.

Each of the 12 recipients received:

  • A handcrafted Star Blanket
  • A certificate and letter of recognition
  • A $2,500 scholarship to support their future education

The Honouring Spirit: Indigenous Student Awards celebrate First Nations, Métis, and Inuit students who exemplify excellence in their academic and personal lives while honouring their heritage.

Congratulations, Shia! Westwind proudly celebrates this significant and well-deserved achievement with you and your family.
