On Tuesday September 6, 2022 elementary students in the Corridor began their school year at the new Charlotte Small Elementary School. Although Aman Builders and WRSD staff are continuing to work hard at finishing some of the outstanding items, we expect them to be finished soon.
It is important to note the significance of the school's name. Charlotte Small Elementary was named for Charlotte Small a Métis woman, born to a nêhiyaw (Cree) mother and a Northwest Trading Company trader in 1785. Her deep rooted knowledge of the land, waterways and language, as an Indigenous woman, was integral in the original mapping of what is now Canada. Charlotte Small, her children and husband, David Thompson, traveled across Turtle Island, what is now known as North America, by foot, canoe, and horseback. She was fluent in Nêhiyawêwin (Cree), French, and English. Charlotte was able to communicate and understand many language dialects of First Nations and Métis which helped in the development of relationships as they journeyed across the land.
The school will be planning an open house on September 13, 2022 from 4:00 - 6:00 pm, so watch the Charlotte Small Elementary School website and Facebook page for more information.
Thank you to all of the staff, students, parents and community for their patience over the past 2 years while the school was being built, and to our partners at Alberta Education and Alberta Infrastructure.
