Edmonton Catholic Schools upgraded St. Teresa of Calcutta Catholic Elementary School's playground this summer. From July 5-7, around 100 volunteers from the University of Alberta's Engineering Youth Alumni Council (ENGGYAC) and the Division's Educational Planning Department installed a new playground for the more than 200 students and Boyle Street community children. The new playground is an inclusive play structure featuring brightly coloured play equipment, poured-in-place rubber surfacing, and playground turf. The design was drafted by taking suggestions from an ultimate wish-list created by St. Teresa of Calcutta students. The school's previous playground had outlived its lifespan with the original rubber surfacing becoming a safety concern for persons with disabilities. Playquest provided guidance and expertise during the two-day build, and the final playground will be ready for its first visitors at the end of July/early August.
This is ECSD's third Volunteer Playground Build since 2018:
- July 2022 - St. Teresa of Calcutta Catholic Elementary School
- July 2021 - St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Elementary/Junior High School
- July 2018 - St. Alphonsus Catholic Elementary/Junior High School
ECSD is moving closer to its goal of having all school playgrounds inclusive and accessible by 2030. 26 playgrounds have been upgraded or re-developed since 2018 and this summer the Division will complete an additional ten builds.
