Students from Acadia and General Byng particpate in CMHR's "Be an Upstander Showcase"

May 29, 2024

On May 23, 2024, Acadia Junior High and General Byng School participated in the Be an Upstander Showcase along with schools from across Manitoba. The Be an Upstander showcase is an annual event amplifying student voices and work for human rights. Students are invited to share their work in the Canadian Museum for Human Rights galleries and talk with visitors about how they are taking action to turn injustice toward justice.

Six students from Acadia Junior High presented their school initiatives during Black History Month. Students and staff collectively worked to rewrite/right history by researching, collating, and publishing a book that honours the achievements and contributions of Black Canadians. The book is called "Know their Names" and can now be found in the Acadia library for future classes.

At General Byng School, students were tasked with completing an "upstander project" that challenged them to use their voices to make a difference. Staff from the Canadian Museum for Human Rights visited General Byng this spring to learn about their work. At the Showcase, two students from General Byng participated by using their voices to further awareness of reproductive rights and a third student was able to express his creativity through music.

Congratulations to everyone involved!
