UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF THE NORTH
UCN Receives Federal Funding to expand Mine Readiness Training Program

February 10, 2025

University College of the North (UCN) is proud to be named as a recipient of Community Economic Development and Diversification (CEDD) federal funding.

UCN will receive $1,154,129 to expand train-to-hire programming for Indigenous students at UCN's Northern Manitoba Mining Academy (NMMA) Mining Readiness Training Program.

"This training program plays a crucial role in supporting the growth of Manitoba's mining industry," emphasized Jamie Grant, UCN Associate Vice-President of Community and Industry Solutions. "Many students of the program are hired before they graduate. Providing training and skills development opportunities for Indigenous and Northern Manitoban workers ensures a skilled and diverse workforce for the future."

The funding will support plans for a dedicated student housing facility in Flin Flon. This initiative ensures that students attending short-term programs have a place to stay, reflecting UCN's dedication to overcoming barriers to education in northern Manitoba. The new modular housing facility solves a pressing logistical challenge and strengthens UCN's capacity to offer its most popular and industry-relevant programs in Flin Flon.

"This funding provides a valuable opportunity to leverage the unique strengths of Northern Manitoba," stated Doug Lauvstad, President of UCN. "We are pleased to collaborate with the federal government to advance the economic and social well-being of our region."

UCN's Mining Readiness Training Program aims to prepare participants for careers in the mining industry. Designed for those seeking entry-level mining jobs, the program combines classroom instruction with hands-on learning, incorporating cutting-edge technologies like virtual and augmented reality to build essential workforce readiness skills.

UCN collaborates with industries, Indigenous communities, and colleges and universities across Manitoba and Canada. This partnership will provide training that strengthens communities in northern Manitoba and develop a skilled local workforce that can thrive.
