On Wednesday, January 14, University College of the North (UCN) connected local athletics with higher education. Business faculty members Janice Seto and Ganna (Anna) Dudina lead a first-of-its-kind financial literacy presentation designed specifically for the hockey players of the Northern Manitoba Blizzard Jr A Club.
The initiative stems from a direct request from the organization, winners of 2025 Turnbull Cup, which recognized the need to equip its young athletes with essential life skills.
The session aims to equip players with the foundational knowledge needed to manage their finances as they navigate their athletic careers.
"We are delighted that the Blizzard organization wanted UCN to deliver this training," said Janice Seto, UCN Business Administration Instructor."
"Learning about Financial Literacy early in life gives you a home-ice advantage," said Anna Dudina, UCN Business Administration Instructor. "By hosting these players on The Pas campus, we can show them the academic opportunities available in their community."
UCN's presentation titled Make Your Money Work for You', lays out a positive approach to budgets and credit card use that has the goal of looking at finances as a critical tool for success. In addition to the financial workshop, Seto and Dudina lead the players on a guided tour of campus.
University College of the North provides learning opportunities to northern communities while respecting diverse Indigenous and northern values.
