YELLOWKNIFE EDUCATION DISTRICT NO. 1
Board of Trustees Announces that Ed Lippert Named Superintendent/CEO, Effective September 1, 2020

July 6, 2020

The Board of Trustees of Yellowknife Education District No. 1 (YK1) is pleased to announce that Ed Lippert has been named Superintendent/ CEO, effective September 1, 2020.

Mr. Lippert will replace Metro Huculak, YK1's current Superintendent, who is retiring at the end of the 2019-2020 school year. Mr. Lippert's term will be for one year.

While it will be hard to say goodbye to Mr. Huculak, the Board of Trustees is confident that Mr. Lippert's passion for student success, his belief in innovation and improved accountability, and his desire to seek creative solutions and partnerships will serve YK1 well this upcoming year.

Mr. Lippert has been involved in education for more than 30 years in various roles, spending time as a classroom teacher in Inuvik and Yellowknife before becoming a department head, assistant principal and principal at École Sir John Franklin High School. He transitioned to his current role of Assistant Superintendent in 2015.

Mr. Lippert's academic background in education began with his Bachelor of Science Honours in Agriculture, followed by his Bachelor of Education with specialties in the sciences. Mr. Lippert looks forward to leading a dynamic District Office team and continuing to be a champion of all educational programs offered at YK1.

"I am dedicated to this community, firmly believe in the District's strategic priorities and am excited about our potential together," said Mr. Lippert. "My own children graduated from the YK1 system and I remain deeply committed to supporting students in Yellowknife."

Mr. Lippert and his wife Kathy have two children, Seth and Joshua, who are both graduates of École Sir John Franklin High School. Outside of work, Mr. Lippert is an avid skier, scuba diver and runner who also has a passion for science, the outdoors and travelling with his family.

Like other school boards, YK1 is facing a series of complex operational challenges due to COVID-19, but the Board of Trustees is convinced the right person will be at the helm for the 2020-2021 school year. We will lean on Mr. Lippert's expertise more than ever now, and look forward to working with him in his new position starting September 1, 2020.
