Jameel Aziz appointed next Superintendent/ CEO of YK1

The Board of Trustees of Yellowknife Education District No. 1 (YK1) is happy to announce the appointment of Mr. Jameel Aziz, BA, BEd, MEd. as its next Superintendent of Schools/ CEO starting August 15, 2022. Mr. Aziz has worked in Manitoba and British Columbia in many rural communities as a teacher, coach, vice principal, principal and, most recently, Assistant Superintendent of School District 58 - Nicola Similkameen (BC). His professional service also includes executive and governance roles with the British Columbia Principals and Vice Principals Association, serving as both President and Executive Director, and with the Canadian Association of Principals, as elected President.

Mr. Aziz has experience in secondary, elementary, French Immersion, and distance/on-line education, and has developed positive engagement with Indigenous communities in his public education assignments. A results-oriented, student-focused leader, he has been a key contributor to improved learning outcomes and academic and athletic excellence. Jameel leads an active outdoors lifestyle and is looking forward to connecting with the City of Yellowknife and its surroundings. 

YK1's current Superintendent of Schools/ CEO, Dr. Cindi Vaselenak, will remain in the position until July 31, 2022. Current Assistant Superintendent Shirley Zouboules will assume acting responsibilities from August 1, 2022 until Mr. Aziz assumes the position of Superintendent of Schools/ CEO on August 15, 2022.
