Greystone Heights Students Raise $930 for Jim Pattison Children's Hospital

June 18, 2024

The Grade 6 classroom at Greystone Heights School has been busy this year.

In addition to initiating a fundraiser that raised $930 for kids at the Jim Pattison Children's Hospital, they have found other ways to give back and spread a little joy.

"Our Grade 6 class has spent the last year looking at inequality in Saskatoon," said Melanie Breckon, Grade 6 teacher. "At the beginning of May, the students were tasked with doing something to make our city a better place, using their resources and talents for good in the community."

Some of the acts of goodwill the Grade 6 students initiated included holding a two-day bake sale and organizing a school-wide food drive for the Salvation Army and Foodbank, donating the funds from a two-day freezie sale to the Cancer Society, and volunteering at the skating rink to help younger skaters learn the sport.

As part of their initiative to raise funds for the Children's Hospital, the students had the opportunity to chat with the hospital's president via zoom. In the meeting, the president encouraged Greystone Heights students to make cards for children in the hospital. The Grade 6 students shared this idea with other classes in the school, resulting in more than 100 handmade cards.

"Looking back, I couldn't be more proud of the outcome and how the whole school got together to make so many people's day," said Penny, a student in Grade 6.

"These are some amazing kiddos, who have accomplished amazing things," said Breckon. "They were able to do so because of our awesome school community and super supportive families.

Most recently, Breckon said she had a student in a primary class ask if it was okay if she (the student) used her own money to purchase freezies for other students in the school who may not be able to buy one but want one.

"This is just one more example of how our students are spreading kindness and joy around the school and community," said Breckon.
