SASKATCHEWAN
Partnership to enhance English as an Additional Language training

October 1, 2024

The University of Saskatchewan's College of Education has partnered with Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools, Saskatoon Public Schools, and Prairie Spirit School Division, to develop a unique education partnership focused on enhancing teacher certification in English as an Additional Language (EAL) education. This initiative aims to support teachers working with the growing number of EAL students in Saskatchewan, addressing classroom challenges and improving educational outcomes for newcomers and local language learners.

Together, the school divisions and the college will design, renew, and deliver five specialized courses in the Post-Degree Certificate in EAL Education (PDCEAL) program. This partnership will empower educators including pre-service teachers, practicing teachers, teacher specialists and administrators with best practices in EAL instruction.

"We've seen a tremendous amount of growth in our city and our school divisions, largely driven by immigration to our province," said Diane Boyko, Board chair of Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools and one of the signatories of the Memorandum of Understanding. "This partnership will help equip our staff so we can in turn better serve students and families who choose Saskatchewan as their new home."

Key elements of the partnership include open communication, mutual respect, and shared resources. Courses will be offered online, ensuring accessibility for teachers across the province. School divisions will also have the opportunity to recommend qualified EAL instructors for course delivery.

This academic partnership is an important step toward filling a critical gap in teacher preparation, ensuring educators are equipped to meet the needs of EAL learners and their families across Saskatchewan.
