DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD ONTARIO NORTH EAST
Culturally Responsive Math

March 23, 2020

On Monday, February 24, Mrs. Lavoie's Grade 2-4 class at Joseph H. Kennedy P.S. learned about traditional Indigenous teachings, and how to make Hair-Bone Pipe Bracelets.

The day started in a good way, with a sharing circle and smudge. Students used linking cubes to make a repeating pattern with different types of beads.  Next, they used a 44 square template to plan out a Hair-Bone Pipe Bracelet, using proportional and spatial reasoning. Finally, all the students made a unique bracelet.

Students also learned the Numbers 1-5 in Anishinaabemowin!

Meegwetch to the following people for supporting the students in their learning: Laura-Jean Flood, (member of Matchechewan First Nation, cultural coordinator for Kunuwanimano), Kaitlyn Julien (DSB1 Indigenous Student Trustee), Xavier Babin (Grade 7 student IFSSe), Brandon Hilts (Grade 12 IFSS), Dina Festarini and Tiffany Elliott (Indigenous Student Advisors).
