DUFFERIN-PEEL CATHOLIC DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD
Cardinal Newman Catholic Elementary School renamed following canonization

October 25, 2019

On October 13, in a canonization ceremony led by Pope Francis at the Vatican, Cardinal Newman became St. John Henry Newman. To reflect this status, Cardinal Newman Catholic Elementary School in Brampton has officially been renamed St. John Henry Newman Catholic Elementary School. School signage and board directories have been updated.

To acknowledge the canonization and school renaming, the school hosted a mass and celebration on October 16.

Born in London, England, in 1801, St. John Henry Newman was ordained a Catholic priest in 1847 and joined the Congregation of the Oratory.  He was named a Cardinal in 1879. He died in 1890. In 2010, he was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI. Saint John Henry Newman's liturgical feast is October 9.

St. John Henry Newman described the holiness of daily life in these words:  "The Christian has a deep, silent, hidden peace, which the world sees not. The Christian is cheerful, easy, kind, gentle, courteous, candid, unassuming, has no pretense, with so little that is unusual or striking in his bearing, that he may easily be taken at first sight for an ordinary man."

St. John Henry Newman Catholic School is located at 698 Balmoral Drive in Brampton and serves over 400 student in Kindergarten to Grade 8.
