On June 7, 2022, HCDSB secondary students participated in the Life Skills Track Meet at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Secondary School!
The Secondary Life Skills track meet was organized by HCDSB staff and secondary students from the Sports Leadership class at St. Francis Xavier.
In past years, the Life Skills track and field meet had one para-event, the 100-metre run. Students in the Sports Leadership class saw this as an opportunity to expand the track and field meet, incorporating more athletic events and fun games!
The day's activities included shot put, frisbee throw, long jump, the 50-metre run and 50-metre hurdles. The event also hosted fun centers, including a freezie stand, games, and a photo booth.
Different divisions were created, allowing students who wanted to be more competitive the opportunity to do so. Ribbons were distributed for each event, and an MVP was chosen from each school.
"It was one of the most incredible things we've been a part of as a teacher," said co-organizing teacher, Jodie Nieuwendyk. "It was amazing to watch the leadership class develop the day and demonstrate a real understanding of what inclusion means. I was blown away by how hard they worked and what an incredible event they created!"
Congratulations to all participating students! Thank you to our staff, St. Francis Xavier Sports Leadership students, and event-day leaders Logan Klaver and Andrew Pedersen for organizing this fun-filled and inclusive event!
