HAMILTON-WENTWORTH CATHOLIC DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD
System Equity Officer Receives Women of Distinction Award

March 13, 2024

Kennishia Boahene, our valued System Equity Officer at the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board, was celebrated at last week's Women of Distinction Awards Gala in Hamilton. Recognized by the YWCA, Boahene's exceptional contributions to equity and dignity were highlighted, specifically for her social justice work and youth advocacy. Kennishia also serves as the President of the African-Caribbean Culture Potpourri Inc.

Boahene joined the HWCDSB in September 2022, initially as an Early Resolutions Officer before assuming the role of System Equity Officer in September 2023. Dedicated to supporting families and students facing equity-related concerns, her commitment to upholding the dignity of every human person is evident daily.

Boahene's journey toward this recognition is rooted in her upbringing, where she was instilled with values of compassion and service. "I grew up in a household with loving parents who would send me off to school with words of prayer and a call to action: 'Let your light shine and be a blessing to someone today,'" she reflected. "As a child, that meant to be kind, to share generously, and to live with compassion. But as I came into adulthood, I began to understand that being a blessing requires putting my faith into action to find opportunities to serve my community."

At the recent Women of Distinction Awards Gala held on March 7th, 2024, she graciously accepted the YWCA award, expressing gratitude for the opportunities presented to her. "There is no door that I have walked through that God did not open for me," she remarked. "I am blessed to work as a System Equity Officer for the same school board that I attended for both elementary and secondary school."

Boahene acknowledged the support of her nominator, mentors, colleagues, family, and fiancé. "I want to thank the YWCA and my award sponsor for recognizing my contributions in the community that has served me, and I feel honoured to serve," Boahene expressed.

Boahene's recognition underscores her unwavering commitment to equity and dignity, serving as an inspiration within our HWCDSB community. We congratulate her on this well-deserved honour.
