HAMILTON-WENTWORTH DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD
EQAO Releases Achievement Results for 2022-23

October 13, 2023

The Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) has released achievement results for the 2022-23 school year.

Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB) can share that 62 per cent of fully participating HWDSB students in Grade 3 meet the provincial standard for reading, and 53 per cent meet the provincial standard for writing.

Similarly, 75 per cent of fully participating HWDSB Grade 6 students meet the provincial standard for reading with writing achievement closely comparable at 73 per cent. Regarding mathematics, 42 per cent of HWDSB Grade 3 students and 35 per cent of Grade 6 students meet the provincial standards.

Additionally, HWDSB is encouraged to know that 77 per cent of Grade 10 students successfully passed the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT), as did 56 per cent of previously eligible students. Also, 45 per cent of HWDSB Grade 9 students meet the provincial standard in mathematics.

"In this second year of uninterrupted learning, we plan to continue to strengthen both literacy and numeracy skills - with targeted focus on mathematics - for all HWDSB students." remarks Sheryl Robinson Petrazzini, Director of Education at HWDSB. "We are acutely aware of the ongoing impacts the pandemic's learning disruptions continue to have on student achievement, and much like the trend province-wide, HWDSB has the most significant opportunity for increased achievement in mathematics."

While mathematic achievement will be a focus, HWDSB will also continue to reduce potential gaps in student learning that resulted from the pandemic. This is a contributing component as it relates to overall EQAO results, and this work continues to be underway as part of HWDSB's Pandemic Recovery Plan.

"Student learning and achievement continues to be our top priority, and in advance of the EQAO results HWDSB has been implementing programs solely designed to enhance student experience and equitable learning outcomes," adds Robinson Petrazzini. "This year and beyond, HWDSB staff look forward to facilitating programs and classroom experiences that support all students on their path to individual learning improvement and academic success."
