HASTINGS AND PRINCE EDWARD DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD
Sophiasburgh Central School wins Battery Blitz School Mission contest

November 4, 2024

Congratulations to the staff and students of Sophiasburgh Central School for their extraordinary efforts to protect the environment through the collection of used batteries. They were the winners of the Battery Blitz School Mission spring 2024 contest, with a student population of just over 150 collecting an impressive 821 kg of batteries.

In attendance for the ceremony were His Worship, Steve Ferguson, Mayor of Prince Edward County; Sophiasburgh Counsellor Bill Roberts; Director of Education, Katherine MacIver; Trustee Rachael Prinzen; and community volunteer Warren Matthews. Principal Carla McFarlane and teacher organizer Sarah Freeland also took to the stage with their group of student leaders to accept the $5000 prize from Sophie Zabonas-Ross from Call2Recycle Canada. During his remarks, Counsellor Bill Roberts told staff and students that they have "brought honour to Sophiasbugh and honour to Prince Edward County. We are very proud of you."

As a participating school, the students also got to celebrate with an Earth Rangers assembly that included a couple special guests: a midland painted turtle and a ball python! The interactive educational presentation had students excited about conservation and doing their part to protect the environment.

While Sophiasburgh Central School is no longer collecting batteries, students wanted everyone to know that batteries do not belong in the landfill, and that batteries are accepted for recycling at a number of locations in the area.
