Last week, the Symphonic Winds and Percussion students from St. Thomas Aquinas High School had the opportunity to travel to Winnipeg for an enriching two-day music experience that combined performance, education, and inspiration.
As part of their trip, students participated in specialized workshops at the University of Manitoba, where they worked closely with a team of renowned clinicians including Jacquie Dawson, Victoria Sparks, Richard Gillis, Monica Huisman, and Johnny Yau. These sessions focused on ensemble and sectional playing, providing students with valuable techniques specific to their instruments and enhancing their overall musicianship.
Following two busy days filled with hands-on learning and unforgettable moments, students returned home feeling tired, inspired, and fulfilled having grown not only as musicians but also as learners and performers.
A highlight of the experience was attending a live performance by Jane Bunnett and Maqueque, a JUNO Award-winning Afro-Cuban jazz ensemble based in Toronto and Havana. The performance left a lasting impression on the students, offering a unique and powerful example of musical excellence and cultural expression.
In addition to their musical learning, students explored the Leo Mol Sculpture Garden and visited Long & McQuade, where they had the chance to learn more about musical instruments and gear.
