LAMBTON KENT DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD
LKDSB Students Go the Distance at District-Wide Elementary Cross Country Meet

October 28, 2026

Nearly 700 Lambton Kent District School Board (LKDSB) student-athletes in Grades 4 through 8 gathered at Canatara Park in Sarnia for the 2026 Elementary District-Wide Cross Country Meet, bringing together some of the Board's strongest elementary runners for a day of competition, perseverance, sportsmanship and school spirit.

Against a backdrop of changing leaves and near-perfect fall weather, students took to the course with different goals. For some, it was their first opportunity to compete at the district level. For others, it marked their final elementary cross country race wearing their elementary school colours. Whether competing for a spot on the podium, chasing a personal best or simply determined to cross the finish line, students demonstrated the effort and perseverance that make the annual event about much more than race results.

Competition was strong throughout the day, with races featuring everything from tight, nearly photo finishes to standout performances from runners who separated themselves from the field. But just as noticeable as the competition was the support surrounding every student who took part.

Hundreds of parents, grandparents, family members and supporters lined the course and the pathway approaching the finish line, creating an atmosphere that at times sounded more like a professional sporting event than an elementary cross country meet. Importantly, that encouragement did not end when the first runners crossed the line. Students further back in the field were greeted with the same applause, cheers and encouragement as they completed their final strides.

That same spirit of support extended behind the scenes. Current and retired LKDSB staff and volunteers worked throughout Canatara Park to start races, record times and results, monitor the finish line, direct runners along the course, supervise key sections of the route and provide assistance when athletes needed it. Volunteers were also positioned throughout the park to help ensure the safety and success of hundreds of runners over the course of the day.

Among those volunteers was a retired LKDSB principal, Anita Sabatini, who returned to support students as a yellow-vested safety crossing guard along the course. As runner after runner passed by, they were met not only with her direction and a watchful eye, but with genuine words of encouragement:

"Follow the rhythm of your feet."

"You are working so hard."

"Incredible job, keep going!"

Many of these small moments reflected something much bigger about the day. While students arrived in jerseys representing schools from across LKDSB, the district-wide meet brought them together as one community. Staff encouraged students whether or not they attended their school. Families cheered for young people they had never met. Volunteers watched over, supported and celebrated every runner who passed their station.

That collective approach reflects the supportive environment LKDSB strives to create for students both inside and outside the classroom: an environment where students are encouraged to challenge themselves, take risks, persevere through difficult moments and know there are people around them invested in their success.

Cross country provides a particularly powerful example of those values. Students compete against some of the strongest runners from across the district, but ultimately, every athlete must run their own race. Success can mean reaching the podium, achieving a personal best, showing sportsmanship toward a competitor or finding the determination to take one more step when the finish line still feels so far away.

The medals and race results will recognize some of the outstanding athletic performances from this year's District-Wide Elementary Cross Country Meet, but the success of the event was evident well beyond the podium. It was found in the perseverance of hundreds of student-athletes, the encouragement along the course, the commitment of staff and volunteers, and a community that continued cheering until the very last runner crossed the line.

That is the LKDSB way.
