Niagara Catholic graduate claims gold at 2025 Special Olympics

April 7, 2025

Congratulations to Ewen Barclay, a Niagara Catholic graduate, who recently brought home the gold from the 2025 Special Olympic World Winter Games in the 1,500-meter speed skating event. The Blessed Trinity Catholic Secondary School grad travelled to Turin, Italy, where she won a total of three medals, including gold in the F1 1,500 meter speed skate.

Barclay started the games off strong as the flag bearer, leading Team Canada during the opening ceremonies.

On the second day of the events, Barclay participated in two division races: the 500-meter and 1,000-meter speed skates. After an impressive performance, she advanced to the finals in both distances, ultimately bringing home a pair of bronze medals.

On the third day of the games, Barclay was set to compete in the 1,500-meter speed skate. She finished this race in first place, claiming the gold medal with an impressive time of three minutes and 1.82 seconds.

She earned the right to represent Canada at the Games after winning four gold medals at the Special Olympics Canada Winter Games in Calgary in 2024.

Keep an eye out for Ewen in the future. She is set to be back on the ice training for the Special Olympics Ontario Winter Games in 2027!

Congratulations, Ewen!
