With headquarters in Regina, the Hanfood Group plans to dramatically increase the distribution of Saskatchewan agri-food products for the Asian Oceania market with a focus on China's middle class.  With plans in the works for a high through-put grain terminal in Nipawin, Cumberland College is ideally situated to contribute on a number of joint initiatives.

The partnership between Hanfood Group and Cumberland College will involve jointly identifying potential research and educational opportunities. "Cumberland College has quickly become a provincial leader in Applied Research and has gained eligibility to apply for federal research grants through the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC)," said Andy Hu, President and CEO of Hanfood Global Group.  "Hanfood values education, science, evidenced-based decision-making and Applied Research which will benefit the community as a whole."

Cumberland College is committed to working in partnership with Hanfood Group to service its training, research, and food production needs.  "Hanfood has ambitious plans for food processing and production in Saskatchewan, and particularly for honey from the region.  Our relationship with Hanfood will allow Cumberland College to form Applied Research partnerships that will benefit our students, the honey production industry, and Hanfood.  We look forward to working with Hanfood to make Applied Research happen in north east central Saskatchewan," says Tom Weegar, President of Cumberland College.

The Town of Nipawin supports this partnership and values the economic and social impact for the community.  Rennie Harper, Nipawin Mayor, adds "The Town of Nipawin congratulates Hanfood and the College on the signing of such a significant MOU."

The College and Hanfood plan to work in consultation to further define partnership agreements, including programs for which Chinese students may be recruited to seek admission to Cumberland College.
