OTTAWA-CARLETON DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD
Full circle: Emily Carr students build community, one conversation at a time

March 11, 2026

Students at Emily Carr Middle School are proving that a stronger community starts with a simple conversation. The school is using sharing circles to bring students together, fostering a culture where every voice is heard and every student belongs.

A weekly well-being tradition

For the Grade 6 class, the circles have become a beloved tradition in the school's Great Hall. Each week, teacher Jessica Beaudoin-Walker guides students through a "Wellness Wednesday." They explore everything from self-care strategies like gratitude, sleep, and positive affirmations to social skills such as communicating and understanding non-verbal cues. The class also uses this time to reflect on days of awareness, such as Rowan's Law and Pink Shirt Day.

On Thursdays, the class circles back to keep the conversation going. Jessica leads a follow-up discussion on the wellness theme, often adding a lighthearted question to get students engaged. One week, students might discuss whether they'd rather explore the deep ocean or outer space. Another week, they imagine what it would be like to navigate the school if they shrank to the size of an ant.

These lighter moments build the trust needed for big conversations. In the circle, students give shout-outs to kind classmates, share what motivates them on a bad day, or offer feedback on their school experience: "If you could change one rule in this classroom, what would it be?"

"Since the beginning of the year, their bond has really come together," says Jessica. "It feels like a family. We've had opportunities to make kids connect with peers that they wouldn't have otherwise."

A place for every student

For Emily Carr Middle School's diverse community of students, these circles are a natural bridge for English Language Learners and newcomer students. The supportive environment encourages students to practice speaking English on topics they are excited about. They leave the circle knowing new information about their peers' interests, which makes it easier to start conversations throughout the week.

While each class has its own approach, the result is the same: a more connected community. By giving students the space to truly learn about one another, Emily Carr is ensuring its school grows stronger with every circle held.
