Four PDSB staff members receive Prime Minister's Excellence Awards

Peel District School Board would like to congratulate three teachers for receiving the 2024 Prime Minister's Award of Teaching Excellence, and one Designated Early Childhood Educator for receiving a Prime Minister's Award for Excellence in Early Childhood Education.

Kristofor Schuermann, an Empowering Modern Learning Resource Teacher has received a Certificate of Achievement for Teaching Excellence in STEM. "Kristofor is an exceptional educator who has consistently provided outstanding support and guidance to colleagues, the community, and, most importantly, his students. As both a colleague and friend, I have personally witnessed his vast knowledge of teaching and STEM, as well as the tremendous positive impact of his mentorship and support," said a colleague. In September, Kristofor will take on a new role as the Teacher-Librarian and STEAM Teacher at Arnott Charlton Public School in Brampton. 

When it comes to inspiring students in the arts, the board would also like to congratulate Allyson Bradley, a Head, Curriculum teacher at Chinguacousy Secondary School and Daryanaz Kamelan-Zargar, a Visual Arts Teacher at Bramalea Secondary School as recipients of the Certificate of Achievement in Teaching Excellence.

Seeing the potential in every student, Allyson encourages them to embrace their interests and use their skills in real-life experiences. "Ms. Bradley is a phenomenal and caring individual and teacher. She values honesty, acceptance and overall respectfulness of people of different genders, sexualities, religions, race and any other identities. She encourages people to be the best versions of themselves and allows people to grow and learn without judgement," said a student from Chinguacousy Secondary School.

As for Daryanaz, she ensures the voices of all students are heard while encouraging her students to express themselves through art. "What sets Daryanaz apart is her ability to instill passion and curiosity for the arts in her students. She creates an atmosphere where students feel empowered to express themselves artistically, fostering not only artistic skills but also confidence and self-expression," said Peter Banhan, Principal of Bramalea Secondary School.

Since 1994, the government of Canada has recognized more than 1,800 elementary and secondary school teachers across the country for their achievements in education. 

In 2002, the government of Canada also began to acknowledge Early Childhood Educators for their outstanding achievements toward supporting young children and for their strong leadership skills. 

Lina Skeard, a Designated Early Childhood Educator at Conestoga Public School, is a recipient of the 2024 Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Early Childhood Education. Known for being Conestoga's school mentor for kindergarten programming, Lina's warmth, joy and compassion for others shine through her daily teaching lessons.  

"Lina's commitment to child development is evident in her personalized approach to understanding each student, creating a nurturing environment where inquiry-based learning flourishes alongside literacy and numeracy skills. Lina's innovative teaching strategies captivate students, instilling a love for learning and inspiring creativity. Beyond her pedagogical prowess, Lina's connections with parents, families, and the community showcase her ability to create inclusive and supportive partnerships. Her infectious positivity and humor contribute to a collaborative atmosphere, making her a beloved figure among colleagues and students alike. As a leader in the field, Lina's impact reaches beyond the classroom, influencing the entire kindergarten team and contributing to the professional growth of her peers. Her multifaceted leadership roles, from mentoring new colleagues to coordinating school-wide initiatives, exemplify her commitment to advancing early childhood education. Lina Skeard is not just an educator; she is a transformative force shaping the future with compassion, innovation, and dedication," said Tammy King, Principal of Conestoga Public School.
