For the second year in a row, the Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) has been recognized by the Climate Challenge Network as the tenth most energy efficient school board in Ontario in their 2024 Top Energy Performing School Boards Report. In addition, the SCDSB was the most energy efficient school board with more than 100 schools in the province.
This year's report analyzed data from the 2021-22 school year. These results were achieved through a systematic approach of identifying opportunities for reducing the energy use of SCDSB schools while also optimizing occupant comfort and indoor air quality.
The SCDSB has implemented strategies to optimize ventilation and filtration system performance to help reduce transmission risk, improve Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) equipment functionality, and enhance indoor air quality. Some of these strategies include:
- comprehensive system-wide recommissioning of all existing HVAC equipment to optimize air circulation
- inspection, testing, and analysis of air flows and static pressures of air handling systems, and adjusting controls accordingly to optimize ventilation system performance
- modification of Building Automation System (BAS) programming to provide additional outside air during occupied periods, and increase equipment run times to provide additional air exchanges and dilution
