SIMCOE COUNTY DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD
Portage View PS students make donation to support youth experiencing homelessness

March 13, 2026

On March 3, students and staff at Portage View PS in Barrie welcomed Lucy Gowers, a representative of Youth Haven, to the school to receive a donation of nearly $2,500.

The funds were raised at the school's annual Gift Gala. In December, Grade 7 and 8 students coordinate this event, where the school community donates gently used or new items that students can purchase for their family members to celebrate the holiday season. All gifts are $1, and each gift is individually wrapped by the Grade 7 and 8 students using donated supplies.

Additional funds from other in-school programs and a staff silent auction were added to the money raised through the Gift Gala, bringing the total to $2,461.65.

Youth Haven provides youth experiencing homelessness and at-risk youth between the ages of 16-24 with the love, support, guidance, programs and life skills needed to foster their sense of well-being and security. Youth Haven provides outreach services, programs, and support to youth throughout Simcoe County.

This initiative links directly to the SCDSB Strategic Priorities in the areas of Well-being and Community.
