THAMES VALLEY DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD
EQAO results highlight mathematics achievement and opportunities for improvement in Thames Valley

October 4, 2024

The Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) has publicly released 2023-24 results for the province and for Thames Valley District School Board. Results show that Thames Valley students are making gains in mathematics as a result of the board's increased focus on the math curriculum and EQAO preparation. Results also reflect that there is still work to be done to improve literacy achievement and learning outcomes for multi-lingual learners and students with special needs.

Highlights:

Elementary Results

  • We're narrowing achievement gaps in reading, writing and math. The percentage of Grade 3 students meeting provincial standard in reading, writing and math have either stayed consistent or continued to increase over the last 2 years. This increase has narrowed the difference between the province and Thames Valley.
  • More elementary students are meeting the provincial standard in math. The percentage of Thames Valley students at provincial standard in math has increased over the last 2 years in both Grade 3 and Grade 6. Thames Valley has placed significant focus on the math curriculum, including the Board Math Action Plan, to support student achievement in numeracy.
  • Grade 6 students are meeting or exceeding literacy standards. 78% of grade 6 students are at provincial standard in reading and 75% are at provincial standard in writing. Although these percentages are lower compared to our 2022-23 results, Thames Valley continues to meet or exceed the target of 75% of students at provincial standard set by the Ontario Ministry of Education.
  • Grade 6 literacy requires additional focus. Thames Valley has already started the work to improve achievement in this area as part of our new Multi-Year Strategic Plan.

Secondary Results

  • More secondary students are meeting provincial standard in math. The percentage of Grade 9 students at provincial standard in math has increased, reflecting the board's increased focus on numeracy. Thames Valley will continue working to support student achievement in this key achievement area.
  • More grade 10 students are passing the OSSLT on their first attempt. Results in the Grade 10 Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) show that the percentage of successful First-Time Eligible students increased in each of the previous years.

Multi-lingual Learners & Students with Special Needs

  • Support for equity-deserving communities will be an area of focus. Thames Valley is committed to improving learning outcomes for multi-lingual learners, students with special needs and students from other equity-deserving communities.
