Students in the UGDSB's Beyond Borders program have once again demonstrated the power of youth leadership and community engagement.
On January 18, the annual Beyond Borders Gala - themed Redefine - raised an incredible $176,000, breaking previous fundraising records. The funds will support the Children's Foundation of Guelph and Wellington, the Make Your Mark Foundation, and the Beyond Borders program.
Beyond Borders is an experiential learning program that challenges students to develop their leadership skills through hands-on experiences.
Centennial CVI teacher Mike Parsons reflected on the success of the event, stating, "The charity event has been an important component of the Beyond Borders Program - highlighting the abilities of young leaders and collaboration when provided with the opportunity to make a difference."
The student-led gala, held at the River Run Centre, featured performances from talented artists, including Alexa Goldie, CJ Cooper, Drew McIvor, Shane Phillips, and the Performance Dance Academy. With over 700 attendees, the event was a celebration of innovation, leadership, and giving back to the community.
Parsons also emphasized the critical role of the Guelph community, saying, "We are fortunate to live in such a supportive community. Every year, the Guelph community supports, trusts, and works with our students."
Thanks to Guelph's ongoing support, Beyond Borders has now raised over $1 million for various charities since 2012.
Marketing and creative director Jack McEachern spoke about the significance of this year's theme, Redefine, explaining, "We view the way we do things at Beyond Borders to be very against the norm and different from a traditional classroom... We are truly changing the lives of students through the many different experiences available within Beyond Borders."
McEachern also highlighted the deep sense of connection fostered within the program, sharing, "When I walked into class on the first day in September, I didn't know a single soul there. But now, four months into the program, I've made lifelong friends."
The Redefine Gala not only raised vital funds for important causes but also showcased the transformative power of experiential learning. The success of this year's event is a testament to the passion, dedication, and leadership of the 56 Beyond Borders students, proving that when young people come together, they can achieve something truly extraordinary.
