New report shows Canadian universities' commitment to climate action

April 18, 2024

Universities Canada and the Canadian Association of University Business Officers released the Action for net-zero at Canadian universities: climate survey report on April 17. The report summarizes the work being done on university campuses to reduce their climate footprint by measuring greenhouse gas emissions, setting reduction targets and publicly reporting on progress.

The report findings show:

  • 78% of university survey respondents are currently measuring their greenhouse gas emissions with an additional 7% planning to initiate measurements soon;
  • 74% have dedicated GHG emissions reduction strategies;
  • 61% are committed to achieving net-zero or carbon neutral status; and
  • 56% will become net-zero prior to 2050.

"We are pleased to see such strong dedication among Canadian universities in measuring greenhouse gas emissions and setting reduction goals," said Gabriel Miller, president and CEO of Universities Canada. "Universities are developing innovative climate technologies, greening their campuses and equipping the next generation to tackle environmental challenges. They are ready to lead the charge on climate action and create a more sustainable Canada."

"Canadian universities are at the forefront of sustainability efforts, implementing a myriad of leading practices to actively mitigate the impacts of climate change throughout their operations," said Nathalie Laporte, executive director of CAUBO.  "The breadth of strategies adopted on campuses across Canada underscores their dedication to climate action and their commitment to reducing their climate footprint and achieving reduction targets."

While Canadian universities are making important strides in reducing their climate footprint, further government investment in sustainable infrastructure is needed to help universities overcome resource and technical constraints and support ongoing climate action.
