BC Research Universities are preparing young British Columbians to be future ready for the jobs of tomorrow, Research Universities' Council of British Columbia Chair, Brett Fairbairn, said in welcoming the review.
Fairbairn was responding to the recent provincial government announcement of a funding review which will be led by former Deputy Minister to Premier Horgan and former BCIT President, Dr. Don Wright and by Dan Perrin, of Perrin, Thorau and Associates.
"RUCBC member universities share the provincial goal of access for our increasingly diverse students and that they are well supported through a properly resourced public post-secondary sector, including universities, colleges, trades and technical programs," said Fairbairn. "As the primary funder of the public post-secondary system, it is important that government provides appropriate resources to the sector to enable it to meet rapidly increasing talent demands, especially in fields which support strong job and wage growth."
Fairbairn said the research universities are optimistic that the key findings Wright and Perrin will provide to government will support a high quality, inclusive, innovative, and responsive post-secondary system in British Columbia that will support prosperity throughout BC.
"The recent provincial labor market outlook shows a growing need for education and training, and now is an excellent time to look at the resource needs of the sector. Support for advanced education is critical if we want a future ready, innovative, sustainable, and inclusive economy in the province".
Fairbairn also said that university programs and delivery models have evolved significantly over the past decade in response to economic and social changes. Our diversity is our strength.
