June 17, 2021

Darlene Cuevas has been selected to receive a $100,000 Schulich Leader Scholarship to study Engineering at University of Manitoba.

A graduate of Winnipeg School Division's St. John's High School in Winnipeg, Cuevas will be entering the Faculty of Engineering this Fall. Cuevas was selected by Phoebe Proven for her outstanding academic achievements. This is the first Nominee to win a Schulich Leader Scholarship at St. John's High School.

Given the unprecedented challenges we are facing this year in Canada, we are again awarding an additional 50 scholarships, for a total of 100.

"We are proud to celebrate 10 years of Schulich Leader Scholarships, the premiere STEM scholarship program in Canada and the world. This group of 100 outstanding students will represent the best and brightest Canada has to offer and will make great contributions to society, both on a national and global scale. With their university expenses covered, they can focus their time on their studies, research projects, extracurriculars, and entrepreneurial ventures. They are the next generation of entrepreneurial-minded, technology innovators," says program founder Seymour Schulich.

Being granted this scholarship has truly made the path ahead of me boundless. Dreaming is free. Yet, it is a harsh fact that in our world today, it would always require some form of monetary foundation to achieve those dreams," says Cuevas. "I am forever grateful to all the teaching and non-teaching staff of my high school, St. John's, as well as all the students for believing in me and, of course, to The Schulich Foundation for this life-changing opportunity.

It is an honour to be able to fully devote my focus in my studies, passions, and especially future endeavours that will contribute to making our world better, without the financial burden my dream would have put on me and my family."

Nominator Phoebe Proven says Cuevas' fellow students will feel happy and proud to know that a St. John's High School student has one this national recognition. "Darlene's gifts of intelligence and perseverance are evident to all who know her, and those that have had a chance to learn alongside her during her time at our school may continue to draw inspiration from the standard that she has set. This recognition of Darlene's ability shines a positive light on our school and our community."

Proven says that Cuevas brings a focus and maturity to all that she does and her demonstrated intelligence is unmatched in my 20-year career as an educator.
