Wemindji hosted Regional Science Fair

March 17, 2020

The Regional Science Fair with 50 students from around Eeyou Istchee gathered for a science project competition with the theme of "Traditions at Heart for a Green Tomorrow.'" The fair took place on March 4 at Joy Ottereyes Rainbow Memorial School in Wemindji.

The winning projects received cash prizes as well as the opportunity to participate in the Quebec Aboriginal Science Fair (QASF).

Here is the full list of the winners:

Cycle One elementary (Grade 1 & 2)

  • 1st place "Camouflage" - Anna Emily Wapachee
  • 2nd place "Plants" - Kaileb Whiskeychan & Dayna Salt
  • 3rd - "Sink or Float" - Blayze Cheezo & Olivia Gilpin

Cycle Two Elementary Grade 3 & 4

  • 1st - "Suspension Bridge" - Jonathan Rombotis
  • 2nd - "Erosion" - Nathaniel Bearskin & Zakariah Rhadaifi
  • 3rd - "Beavers: Natures' Engineers" - Qianna Mapalagama & Elisha Hope Bosum

Grade 5

  • 1st "Don't Text and Drive" - Audrey Matoush
  • 2nd - "Filtration & Purification" - Waabin Lameboy & Adam Rhadaifi
  • 3rd - "Reaction Time" - Aaliyah Shanush & Verona Mason

Grade 6

  • 1st - "Waste Energy" - Deandra Spencer-Tebiscon & Sanaa Souleymane-Moussa
  • 2nd - "Cree Camps" - Sheralyn Simard
  • 3rd - "Best Fire Starter" - Darcy Hudon & Kaida Visitor

Secondary 1 & 2

  • 1st - What Type of Learner" - Tashuit Verma
  • 2nd - "Water is Life" - Ella Grimstead & Rim Rhadaifi
  • 3rd - "Electromagnet" - Joy Gunner & Isaac Iserhoff

Secondary 3 & 4

  • 1st - "Does Listening to Music Help You Remember" Shanelle Moar & Margaret Esau
  • 2nd - Snow Pollution" - Rylan Dixon & Blaze Hester
  • 3rd - "Wind Energy" - Chris Dali
