CALGARY CATHOLIC SCHOOL DISTRICT
Chief Superintendent Strother retires after 37 years

March 13, 2020

Chief Superintendent Gary Strother will retire on February 29. He will be succeeded by Bryan Szumlas, currently area director providing services to schools in north central Calgary and Airdrie.

Gary has been with the district for more than 37 years and has been chief superintendent for the past eight years. During his time as chief, he witnessed the number of students grow by nearly 10 per cent and staff by 500 positions.

"We work tirelessly to serve our rapidly growing community and I'm especially proud that we have been consistently recognized as one of the best places to work in Alberta," says Strother.

Gary has navigated CCSD through three changes in provincial government and three municipal elections, integrated numerous pieces of legislation, contributed to a comprehensive provincial curriculum and worked to austere provincial budgets.

His legacy includes a vibrant spiritual and academic culture, a community focused on advocating for children, effective stewardship of resources that benefit students, and continual improvements to Catholic education programs and staff performance.

"I feel so blessed to have served our vibrant Catholic community. A community that grows together in faith, that gives back to those less fortunate, and who comes together to support Catholic education."

"I am confident that our new leader will continue to put students first and build on our district's excellent reputation as an educational leader."

Bryan Szumlas will be appointed CCSD's new chief superintendent and executive officer effective March 1, 2020.
