CALGARY CATHOLIC SCHOOL DISTRICT
Board of Trustees Approves the 2020-2021 Audited Financial Statements

November 25, 2021

At the November 24th's public board meeting, the Calgary Catholic School District (CCSD) Board of Trustees approved the 2020-2021 audited financial statements, reflecting a surplus of $6.5 million, representing approximately 1.1 per cent of expenditures.

The district's year-end financial results are better than the budgeted $4.9 million deficit, primarily due to operational cost savings realized in substantially all areas of non-instructional spending, mainly resulting from the continued prevalence of COVID-19 related activity restrictions throughout the fiscal year.

"The district continued to focus on protecting the teaching and learning experience at our schools despite the public health restrictions in effect, through judicious choices for deployment of resources where they were needed the most, given the evolving landscape," said Board Chair Cathie Williams. "On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I would like to commend our Chief Superintendent Dr. Bryan Szumlas and our senior administrative team for their continued leadership and sound recommendations to the board during these unprecedented times."

Total CCSD revenues were $615.7 million, up by $8.9 million (1.5 per cent) over 2019-2020, primarily due to various COVID-19 related funding grants from the federal and provincial governments. Total district expenditures were $609.2 million, reflecting a decrease of $3.5 million (0.6 per cent) from the previous year, primarily due to lower spending resulting from curtailed activities in a variety of areas, partially offset by the additional outlays associated with the deployment of COVID-19 related funding grants.
