ST. CLAIR CATHOLIC DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD
Celebrating Continued Success in Math Achievement through MAAP

November 18, 2024

St. Clair Catholic is proud to celebrate the continued success of its Math Achievement Action Plan (MAAP), now in its second year. After a strong 2023-24 academic year, students in priority schools have shown significant gains in math proficiency, surpassing the provincial improvements of comparable schools.

The MAAP, aligned with the Board's strategic goals for student success, has had a substantial impact on math achievement. The initiative's targeted approach including professional development for educators, integration of digital resources, and support from math facilitators has strengthened math foundations and increased student engagement.

Key Achievements:

  • Exceptional Growth in Learning: Students in St. Clair Catholic's priority schools have demonstrated stronger improvements in math. Grade 3 students achieved an 11- percentage-point increase, compared to a 6-point increase provincially. In Grade 6, students' math scores grew by 17 percentage points, surpassing the provincial increase of only 3 points. This achievement is reflected in EQAO assessment results, which show consistent gains exceeding provincial trends in similar schools.
  • Enhanced Support for Educators: Math facilitators have collaborated with teachers, providing co-teaching, modeling, and targeted interventions to boost student learning and confidence.
  • Effective Integration of Digital Tools: Digital resources like MathUP and KnowledgeHook have enhanced learning. Real-time emails from KnowledgeHook have helped teachers address student misconceptions promptly.

"We are immensely proud of the progress our students and educators have made through the Math Achievement Action Plan," says Scott Johnson, Director of Education. "This achievement reflects their dedication and commitment to excellence in mathematics. It marks an inspiring milestone as we continue to foster mathematical excellence across our district."

Looking ahead, the next phase of the MAAP will focus on expanding professional development, digital tools, and support for secondary students. Continued collaboration with math facilitators will equip teachers with strategies to address diverse student needs, while MathUP will be further integrated, including a pilot of MathUP Student in priority schools to personalize learning. Additionally, collaboration with secondary educators will address key success indicators, including preparation for the new Ontario Secondary School Diploma requirements.
