ENGLISH MONTREAL SCHOOL BOARD
EMSB supplies students with solar glasses and educates them about the eclipse

March 18, 2024

With the much-anticipated solar eclipse set to take place on April 8, the English Montreal School Board will do its part to ensure its students and staff can safely take advantage of the once-in-a-lifetime celestial opportunity by distributing solar glasses throughout our network.

Partnering with the Montreal Planetarium, the EMSB will ensure the delivery of the specialized glasses throughout March to safeguard the unique viewing opportunity for all our stakeholders.

In addition to providing the protective viewing glasses, the EMSB Educational Services Department's Science and Technology consultants have also been working diligently with schools to ensure that the solar eclipse becomes a learning opportunity for all students. Special lessons on the solar eclipse began before March Break and will continue until April 8.

Teacher Alex Rosauri from John Caboto Academy in Ahuntsic, for instance, has been working diligently with all his science classes to ensure that students are prepared for next month's solar eclipse. By using models of the earth and the moon, students are able to walk through the eclipse process. Additionally, Mr. Rosauri has crafted various lessons to speak to the rarity of what Montrealers are about to experience as well as the dangers of not taking proper care when viewing the eclipse.

"Although April 8  is a pedagogical  day, many of our teachers are preparing all types of great learning possibilities leading up to the big day," stated EMSB Chair Joe Ortona.
