Team Canada wins nine awards at hybrid Regeneron ISEF 2022 in Atlanta, GA

Ten young scientists selected by Youth Science Canada represented the country from May 7 to 13, at the 2022 Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair - the most prestigious youth STEM project competition in the world. The Team Canada-ISEF students brought home seven grand awards and two special awards.

"The Team Canada finalists once again excelled at this year's ISEF," says Prof. Patrick Whippey, chair of Youth Science Canada's selection panel. "During the event, the students showed their outstanding level of knowledge, curiosity, and commitment to STEM through their projects. The creativity, constant inquisitiveness, and eagerness to learn led these students through the competition."

Seven grand awards were presented to Team Canada-ISEF during the 2022 hybrid event:

Second Award - Behavioural and social sciences, $2,000, George D. Yancopoulos Innovator Award

Haolin Li, Crescent School, Ontario, Canada

Decoding the Underlying Neural Activity of Neurodegeneration in Traumatic Brain Injury

Second Award - Earth and environmental sciences, $2,000, George D. Yancopoulos Innovator Award

Artash Nath, Bloor Collegiate Institute, Ontario, Canada

The Silence of Global Oceans: Acoustic Impact of the COVID-19 Lockdown

Third Award - Biomedical engineering, $1,000, George D. Yancopoulos Innovator Award

Hardit Singh, Cameron Heights Collegiate Institute, Ontario, Canada

Speculor: A Comprehensive Teleophthalmology Platform for People Centered Eyecare

Third Award - Energy: sustainable materials and design, $1,000, George D. Yancopoulos Innovator Award

Calvin Karthik, Kenner Collegiate Vocational Institute, Ontario, Canada

Fourth Award - Cellular and molecular biology, $500, part of the George D. Yancopoulos Innovator Award

Fourth Award - Earth and environmental sciences, $500, George D. Yancopoulos Innovator Award

Fourth Award - Robotics and intelligent machines, $500, George D. Yancopoulos Innovator Award

Henry Zhao, Collingwood School, Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada

Low-Cost Quadruped Robot With Rough Terrain Traversal, Obstacle Avoidance, and Autonomous Navigation

Two special awards were presented to Team Canada-ISEF during the 2022 hybrid event:

Certificate of Honorable Mention, a 1-year free student membership to the INCOSE, and free virtual admission to the 2022 International Symposium of the INCOSE

"The success of these Canadian students at Regeneron ISEF shows the importance of being curious and seeking answers to scientific questions to better the world through STEM," says Reni Barlow, executive director of Youth Science Canada, the national charitable organization behind Team Canada-ISEF since 1995. "The projects presented were outstanding and represent the level of excellence in Canada's young scientists."
