WINDSOR-ESSEX CATHOLIC DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD
St. Joseph's addition opens five months early

September 9, 2026
Students and staff at St. Joseph's Catholic High School will be in for a big surprise when they come back to school next week to find that a new eight-room addition is now ready for use.

"This addition wasn't expected to open until February of 2027 at the start of second semester," said WECDSB Chief Executive Officer John Ulicny, "so this is exceptional news - especially for a school community like St. Joseph's which has experienced some accommodation pressure due to a great deal of growth in the surrounding neighbourhoods in the last few years. So we're especially grateful to our friends at Sfera Architectural Associates and Alliance General Contracting for delivering this project well ahead of schedule."
Through the 2023-24 Capital Priorities program, the Ministry of Education provided WECDSB with $4.1 million in total funding for this addition, which will accommodate approximately 184 student spaces.

The earlier than anticipated opening can be credited to a shovel ready design, a diligent contractor and quick, efficient municipal approvals from the City of Windsor, according to Jason Lazarus, Vice Chair of the WECDSB and one of two Trustees who represents the school.

"We're certainly grateful to the Ministry of Education for providing us with the funding to complete these wonderful new spaces for our staff and students," he added. "This will be a great way for them to kick off the new school year."

Projects like the one at St. Joseph's are part and parcel of the Ministry of Education's emphasis on student achievement and success, according to Paul Calandra, Minister of Education.

"As students head back to school, our focus is on giving every student the opportunity to succeed," Calandra said. "That means giving teachers the tools and resources they need, investing in modern schools, and making sure every dollar we invest in education is driving stronger student achievement."

Windsor Tecumseh MPP Andrew Dowie said he's thrilled to see the project finished.

"This new addition is a tremendous investment in the students and staff of St. Joseph's Catholic High School, providing much-needed modern learning spaces for a growing school community," Dowie said. "I'm proud to see this important project completed five months ahead of schedule and to help deliver the spaces students need to succeed."
