UNIVERSITY OF SUDBURY
Message from the University of Sudbury regarding the future of Indigenous Studies

April 23, 2021
Since April 1, when Laurentian University announced its unilateral decision to terminate the Laurentian federation, we have received numerous messages of support from Indigenous leaders, communities and organizations expressing their concern about the future of our Indigenous Studies program.  For many, its demise would be a step backward from the spirit and intent of the Calls to Action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

Founded in 1975, the Indigenous Studies program at the University of Sudbury is one of the first of its kind in Canada and has long been rooted in Indigenous spirituality and ways of knowing.  It has served Indigenous communities and formed generations of community leaders, promoting dialogue, understanding and reconciliation.

Due to Laurentian's decision to terminate the federation, we regret that we will be unable to teach courses in this program as of May 1.  To assist students who require such courses, we have allowed Laurentian University to teach six courses for the 2021 Spring semester only as we discern the future of this important program.

We are currently in discussions with Indigenous partners regarding the future of this program, favouring a solution that will enable Indigenous education by and for Indigenous nations themselves.  In the spirit of truth and reconciliation, we are committed to doing what is best for students and Indigenous communities.
